About Devil's Backbone Conservation Area

Devil's Backbone Conservation Area

Devil's Backbone Conservation Area is located in Boone County, Missouri, featuring a distinctive 1,200-foot-long sandstone ridge that rises sharply above the surrounding landscape. The land was acquired and is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation with the goal of protecting native habitats and providing outdoor recreation. The rolling hills and deep ravines are covered with oak-hickory forests, various glades, and some prairie patches supporting a wide range of plant and animal species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds. Historically, the ridge is named for its dramatic profile, resembling a spine or backbone, and has long been popular for local explorers. Outdoor enthusiasts come for the well-maintained trails that offer panoramic views from the ridge’s crests, excellent fishing opportunities in the nearby streams stocked with bass and sunfish, and birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations. The conservation area presents a variety of landscapes: steep ridges, forested slopes, small wetlands, and glades that give it ecological significance in the region. Visitors often appreciate the area's quieter atmosphere away from larger state parks, while also enjoying the scenic vistas and challenging terrain for mountain biking. The area appeals to both casual day visitors and more dedicated naturalists looking to study Missouri’s native flora and fauna in a protected setting.
